Great American Bake Sale Saturday at Midtown Global Market
This Saturday I’m joining forces with a whole bunch of other area food bloggers at the Midtown Global Market to participate in my first bake sale. I’m really excited. On a scale of eye rolling to full body cringing, how nerdy do you think it would be if I show up in my own apron?
I’m not sure what the other food items available will be, but I can tell you what I’m making. It’s a twist on my mom’s famous popcorn. I say famous because any kid that grew up near my sister or me know about the giant stainless steel bowls she’d serve us at slumber parties. Kids giggling with greasy faces and sheen coated salty finger-tips filled our basement as the TV screen blinked back our favorite movies, from Care Bears to Better Off Dead. “I want my two dollars!”
I use a base of bacon grease – it’s probably better for your heart if you don’t know exactly how much. I pop the popcorn in a giant kettle type pot on my gas stove top and then coat it in Spanish Paprika spiked butter – a lot of it and then generously toss in waterfalls of sea salt. The result is lustily smokey flavored butter bits that dissolve on your tongue the minute you pop it in your mouth as gushes of anxious saliva pool at the ready for the next handful. It’s utterly addictive.
Doesn’t that make you want to do good? Please come see me and my other talented bakers (who I’m guessing are mostly going the more traditional baked good route, for you sweet teeth.) Please come and say hi if the fluorescent ruffled eyesore apron isn’t too much for you to take!
